Star Lounge & O'Leary's

We headed south on a journey to Ventura, CA. We found a campsite just south of Rincon, parked, and paddled out to some head high sets all to ourselves. The warm water was perfect on the cloudy overcast day, a little choppy but we got good Southern California waves.

After a fun surf session we headed downtown to check out the nightlife and get some grub. As we drove down Main Street, we spotted the flashy Star Lounge. We had to check this place out.

Once we entered the bar we were immediately greeted by a real cutie, a perky blonde girl with a perfect smile. Her name was Daisy. (Daisy has been working at the Star Lounge for 2 years.) We asked for a beer and got a pitcher of Sierra Nevada.

The bar was clean, modern, long and narrow, with pool tables and a good size dance floor. The Star Lounge has live music, but not on a Tuesday night, the online jukebox worked just fine.

Established in 1976, the Star Lounge use to have a hotel upstairs in conjunction with the lounge. Customers could get drunk and pass out upstairs. The hotel area is now a gentlemen’s club with no connection to the lounge.

We asked Daisy where we could get some dinner and she made a suggestion, Jersey Mike’s Subs, a place next door. She placed our order and it was delivered in no time. Good sandwiches and wraps that don’t break the bank. They were tasty and hit the spot.

We had a few beers and laughs with Daisy and told her we would meet up with her later. We bounced down Main street to a few more bars. One place had a reggae band and we cut the rug with the locals, but only caught two songs before the band had to pack it up.

We then headed to O’Leary’s where Daisy's sister Amber works. Another fun bar in Ventura, even the guys back at the campground recommended O’Leary’s. This place was also long and narrow and had two pool tables, a new air hockey table, darts and the only shuffleboard table in the area. Pabst Blue Ribbon on tap for $2.50 and Sierra Nevada in bottle for $4.

We rocked out to the online jukebox, they do have live bands but not on a Tuesday. We sipped on Sierra’s until late, O’Leary’s didn’t disappoint us.

We woke up early the next day and paddled out in our trunks, on the longboards, in the cool water, to wake ourselves up. The waves were a little smaller, but the cold jolt did the trick temporarily.

We enjoyed our stay in Ventura and a real blast hanging out with Daisy and Amber. We’ll definitely return to Ventura for some more surf and fun.

Check out the Star Lounge and O’Leary’s if you’re in Ventura, these two places are very hospitable and friendly, providing quality service with a positive attitude.
